Start with jurisdiction, not nationality
Being an NRI or living abroad does not by itself select an Indian court. Marriage solemnisation, the parties’ residence, applicable statute, earlier proceedings and relief sought can matter. Obtain advice before filing or relying on a foreign order.
Prepare cross-border records
Collect the marriage record, present and previous addresses, identity and immigration-status records relevant to the issue, prior orders, settlement communications and an asset or child-related chronology. Do not send full unredacted documents through an initial message.
Attendance and service
Remote participation is not automatic. Service outside India, authorisation, affidavits, notarisation or apostille questions depend on the country, document and court direction. A case plan should identify what can be prepared remotely and when personal participation may be required.
